I am sorry to hear of your unfortunate loss. I guess the first thing you need to do is find a copy of his DD214.
Hopefully someone will know more and can give more information to help you.

One person who would most likely be a good contact would be your town or city's own Veteran's Service Officer - I think they usually work a few days of the week in the Town Hall, depending on the size of your town or city you might find one in a neighboring town if not in your own.

Good luck and my condolenses.

I am so sorry about your loss.  When my sister in law went through this our local funeral home made the call to the veterans and got the information on the deceased veterans discharge, Form DD214, that enabled the deceased to have honor guard at the funeral.  As far as ordering a headstone, in my research for my sister in law it said to complete VA Form 40-1330, Application for Standard Government Headstone.  You may find useful info at www.militaryconnections.com/burial_main.cfm.   Again condolences in your loss.
