A recent passing of a WW II veteran who died without sufficient funds to pay for a funeral made me realize the need to have a burial assistance program.  I have not been in the military so I'm not sure if I am supposed to be using this forum.  However, after losing a local hero and finding out that what you receive from S.S. and the Military combined is not enough to pay the cemetery for opening and closing of a grave, my husband said someone should start a foundation to assist these families in honoring the passing of someone who honorably served their country.  I have been trying to find out if anyone is aware of any burial assistance funds from private sources.  I know there is much need for funding in all areas of military benefits but I think every veteran should know that when his/her life is over their funeral will be befitting their service.  I know the government will provide honor guards, taps, a flag, and a headstone.  In this case our veteran was given this tribute plus the Yakima Warriors provide the 21 gun salute.  It worked out with help from the extended family and local community.  I know of other veterans that were buried with help from veteran clubs.  What I'd like to do is create a website exclusively for networking businesses, clubs, and individuals who are available when this situation arises that are willing to donate or give discounts to those veterans who need it.  If there is a need for this assistance, and I'm sure there is, I would like to start a non profit organization and try to get some government and private grants that would provide funding to do this.  It could list resources state by state, organize and post fund raising events, as well as have an area to provide memorial tributes and military statistics.  All of this is in a planning stage but would love ideas or input on need, resources currently available, etc.  If I am supposed to be a member of the military to use this forum please let me know.

Sounds like your cause is just, and that there may be a need for it. I can not offer much as I am currently spread very thin. While it is a forum for Veterans and those currently serving, we always welcome any public with good intentions.

Good luck, hopefully you will find some help.
